The Dwight Hall at Yale Education Capacity Building VISTA member will strengthen education outreach programs through development and grant writing activities. The VISTA member will research foundation and government grants, build alliances with partner organizations, produce marketing materials for program activities, manage grant applications, and support development efforts for education initiatives. Dwight Hall at Yale, the Center for Public Service and Social Justice is an independent 501(c)(3) housed on the Yale campus that focuses on the needs of the New Haven community by mobilizing Yale student participation in student and community organizations. Its mission is to foster civic-minded student leaders and to promote service and activism in New Haven and around the world. A significant part of the VISTA member’s efforts will be to expand Dwight Hall’s capacity to support New Haven’s ambitious school reform initiative. This effort aims to eliminate the achievement gap, cut the dropout rate in half, and ensure that every graduating student has the academic ability and the financial resources to attend and succeed in college. The VISTA member will support these school reform efforts by providing resources to improve the quality of Dwight Hall’s student-run programs while also enhancing Dwight Hall’s capacity to address critical urban education challenges. A VISTA member at Dwight Hall at Yale would be a key member of an organization consisting of 6 full-time and 4 part-time staff members. The VISTA will receive close supervision and mentorship and have access to training opportunities at Yale University and workshops hosted at New Haven non-profits and foundations.
Member Duties : The Dwight Hall at Yale Education Capacity Building VISTA member will identify corporate, foundation and government grants pertaining to education outreach, community service, volunteer development, afterschool programming and other relevant areas; build key strategic partnerships with the school district, Yale student leaders and community organizations to develop collaborative grant proposals; produce marketing materials to support development outreach for Dwight Hall at Yale to expand service programs; manage grant applications and awards through database management; gather, analyze and present data for grant requirements; provide organizational support for volunteer recruitment, development of volunteer resources, and education program support.
Program Benefits :
AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers receive a modest stipend ($11,724/year) to help offset living expenses during their year of full-time service. Health coverage and childcare assistance are offered through AmeriCorps and candidates are eligible for an Education Award of $5,550 to apply towards student loans or an End of Service Stipend.
