May 18 – Volunteers Needed for Leila Day Spring Fair!
Community Volunteers at the Leila Day Spring Fair
Leila Day Nursery School is one of New Haven’s most treasured community institutions. Leila Day, a private, not-for-profit child-care program/pre-school/kindergarten, has been serving children of working families in our area for more than 125 years, the longest continuously operating program of its kind in the nation.
Leila Day stands out in our community not only for the extraordinarily high quality of the care it provides, but also because it is one of the few child care programs that serves families from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and regardless of family income. In fact, more than three quarters of our families receive some form of tuition assistance from our sliding scale. Leila Day also provides free preschool to Wilbur Cross students whose children have attended the Wilbur Cross daycare but have aged out.
The Leila Day Spring Fair is the major, annual fundraising event, completely parent run and with all proceeds going to support the sliding scale at Leila Day. The Fair is a fun-filled day of games and activities for kids including pony rides, crafts, games, face painting, music and food. Because the Fair is strictly organized and run by parents, we have a need each year for volunteers from the community to work at the Fair. In years past volunteers have come from local public and private high schools and colleges. Volunteers typically work the entire day of the Fair, this year on May 18th (with a rain date of May 19th.) We place volunteers wherever there is need. In recent years volunteers have done face painting and nails, run the Italian ice station, received tickets and assisted with games, helped kids get onto and off of the zip line and helped with set up and clean up. We are happy to sign off on any community service hours that students require and volunteers usually have a great time! If volunteers wish to work together we will make every effort to accommodate. Further, if a volunteer can only commit to part of the day, we are still happy to have you. Finally, since we really do count on our volunteers, if you sign up, please be sure that you show up!
