Fall Communications Internship at a Great Nonprofit

Columbus House is looking for an enthusiastic Communications/PR/Marketing intern to work with our Development Department this fall. You will work directly alongside our dedicated and experienced team of professionals to help execute our annual Development Plan while gaining valuable, real-world experience in nonprofit marketing and communications. As a member of our team, you will work with others on current and ongoing projects, as well as new and special projects as it relates to your interests and course work. If necessary, Columbus House can work with your instructor to help you satisfy specific course requirements.

What You Will Learn:

  • Planning and executing a community and/or fundraising event
  • Creating compelling content for media advisories and press releases
  • Relationship building with key community members, businesses, donors, and volunteers through thoughtful and strategic communications
  • Social media and email marketing analytics
  • How to track the effectiveness of direct mail solicitation and utilize communications to acknowledge and engage supporters and friends

Tasks May Include:

  • Developing strategies with staff to retain and promote online activity and engagement
  • Creating media advisories and press releases and distributing them to local media outlets
    Researching local and regional media outlets and opportunities to best publicize our mission, programs, and events
  • Updating and maintaining media lists
  • Developing brochure and display materials and assisting with other promotional tasks
  • Event preparation, planning, and promotion
  • Researching and identifying online communication channels for potential volunteers
  • Creating Volunteer Position Descriptions to help promote current opportunities
  • Related administrative support

What We Require:

  • Current rising junior or senior
  • Communications, marketing, and/or public relations major; and have course credits (successfully completed classes) in public relations, communications, and/or marketing
  • Familiarity with social networking sites
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications
  • Organized with an ability to prioritize time-sensitive assignments
  • Creative, flexible, and willing to ask questions
  • Interest in the mission of Columbus House
