The Dwight Hall at Yale Board of Directors has unanimously selected Peter Crumlish as the new Executive Director for Dwight Hall at Yale effective June 1st. Crumlish brings a wealth of leadership experience to this position, having served as the Director of Resource Development for Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven, and as a past Director of College Counseling at Hebron Academy and Director of Partnerships for Parks in New York City. He is a summa cum laude graduate of the Yale Divinity School. Peter served two years in the Peace Corps, training teachers in the Philippines, and currently serves as a member of the board of directors for the Calvin Hill Day Care Center and the Congo Leadership Initiative.

“We are delighted to have Peter join our organization. He brings a passion for service and advocacy that has been demonstrated in both his career and service activities,” said Connie Royster, chair of the Board of Directors.

Crumlish was selected after an extensive search process that involved students, board, and staff in considering numerous candidates. “He impressed people with his background in service on a national and international level and his experiences in community engagement,” said a member of the student executive leadership team. “Students at Dwight Hall are committed to a wide variety of service and advocacy causes and welcome someone who shares these same values in building stronger communities.”

“I am very excited by this opportunity to support the hard work and enthusiasm of the Yale students who serve New Haven and communities around the world,” Crumlish said. “The complex issues we face today as global citizens demand the leadership, innovation and compassion that Dwight Hall embodies and has cultivated for more than a century.”

An open house and reception to welcome Peter will be held on both Saturday, May 25th and June 1st from 3:00 – 5:00PM in the Library at Dwight Hall, 67 High St. in New Haven.

Community Volunteers at the Leila Day Spring Fair

Leila Day Nursery School is one of New Haven’s most treasured community institutions. Leila Day, a private, not-for-profit child-care program/pre-school/kindergarten, has been serving children of working families in our area for more than 125 years, the longest continuously operating program of its kind in the nation.

Leila Day stands out in our community not only for the extraordinarily high quality of the care it provides, but also because it is one of the few child care programs that serves families from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and regardless of family income. In fact, more than three quarters of our families receive some form of tuition assistance from our sliding scale. Leila Day also provides free preschool to Wilbur Cross students whose children have attended the Wilbur Cross daycare but have aged out.

The Leila Day Spring Fair is the major, annual fundraising event, completely parent run and with all proceeds going to support the sliding scale at Leila Day. The Fair is a fun-filled day of games and activities for kids including pony rides, crafts, games, face painting, music and food. Because the Fair is strictly organized and run by parents, we have a need each year for volunteers from the community to work at the Fair. In years past volunteers have come from local public and private high schools and colleges. Volunteers typically work the entire day of the Fair, this year on May 18th (with a rain date of May 19th.) We place volunteers wherever there is need. In recent years volunteers have done face painting and nails, run the Italian ice station, received tickets and assisted with games, helped kids get onto and off of the zip line and helped with set up and clean up. We are happy to sign off on any community service hours that students require and volunteers usually have a great time! If volunteers wish to work together we will make every effort to accommodate. Further, if a volunteer can only commit to part of the day, we are still happy to have you. Finally, since we really do count on our volunteers, if you sign up, please be sure that you show up!
