SUMMARY:Stand Up Against Homelessness with New Reach
DESCRIPTION:Purchase tickets here! \n\n\n\nLocation: College Street Music Hall\, 238 College Street\, New Haven\, CT 06510 \n\n\n\nDoors open at 7 pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStand Up Against Homelessness with New Reach for a fun and hilarious night out to help end homelessness in Connecticut. This second annual charity event will feature performances from Bianca Del Rio and Gianmarco Soresi. \n\n\n\nNew Reach \n\n\n\nSince 1990\, New Reach has implemented best practices across the region to develop a continuum of housing interventions and supports – helping thousands of vulnerable households and families achieve stability and self-reliance. Today\, the agency provides a full spectrum of housing services that meet the varying and complicated needs of at-risk families\, youth\, and individuals. From eviction prevention for public housing residents\, to the development of affordable and supportive housing\, and everything in between\, New Reach serves thousands each year throughout Fairfield and New Haven counties. \n\n\n\nBIANCA DEL RIOSince becoming the season six winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race\, Bianca Del Rio has been a dimple-cheeked\, larger-than-life drag queen and outrageous comic who isn’t afraid to shock and offend. Thanks to her snarky frankness\, impeccable timing\, and politically incorrect humor\, she became the show’s breakout star\, winning its sixth season. Dubbed the “Joan Rivers of the Drag World” (The New York Times)\, there isn’t anything Bianca is afraid to say. A self-professed “clown in a gown”\, Bianca is quick to point out she is the biggest joke of all. \n\n\n\nGIANMARCO SORESIDubbed “the guy from all those General Electric commercials.” Gianmarco has appeared everywhere from Blue Bloods to Comedy Central. He has a wide variety of acting talent and a natural ability to make people laugh\, working side-by-side with some of the biggest names in Hollywood such as Jennifer Lopez\, Tracy Morgan\, and Billy Crystal. Make sure to have the popcorn ready\, you will not want to leave your seats once he hits the stage!

SUMMARY:Woodworking for Liberation
DESCRIPTION:Frailty Myths\, a non-profit based in Oakland\, California\, is bringing its communityworkshops to NEW HAVEN\, CT\, hosting a free self-reliance workshop for women\, trans\, andgender-nonconforming communities. This is an incredible opportunity to see how communitiesare coming together and fighting back in a year of unprecedented attacks against marginalizedcommunities\, opening a space to challenge toxic masculinity and learn woodworking\,construction\, and self-reliance skills to literally build a new world. \n\n\n\nFrom woodworking\, sailing\, rope access climbing\, and other self-reliance skills\, each FrailtyMyths workshop asks a powerful question: \n\n\n\nCan you change the world by building a new one? \n\n\n\nCurating a conversation around racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, and inequalitycreates a space where these women\, trans\, and gender nonconforming participants\, FrailtyMyths is building transformative communities across the United States. \n\n\n\nFrailty Myths was co-founded by Yale School of Management grad Georgia Faye Hirsty (Classof ‘22). As a Yale grad\, Georgia’s excited to bring Frailty Myths workshops to New Haven andConnecticut. \n\n\n\nSince launching in-person empowerment workshops in 2016\, Frailty Myths has hostedthousands of participants across the United States in curated workshops that educate aboutself-reliance skills while also healing from the wounds of racism\, sexism\, and patriarchy in anincreasingly authoritarian world. \n\n\n\nOne participant said: “I cannot express enough of my gratitude for offering thisworkshop. It was not only fun to make something on my own\, but I left feelingempowered and accomplished. As someone who works in an industry where women areoften competitive…it was inspiring to be in a group of women who were there to supportone another and cheer each other on.”(LINKS TO VIDEOS AND PHOTOS WILL BE AVAILABLE HERE. ALL CREDIT TO @FRAILTYMYTHS) \n\n\n\nAbout Frailty Myths:Frailty Myths was founded in October 2016 in Oakland\, California\, by four diverse womencommitted to one transformative idea: \n\n\n\nTo rise from the oppressive myths of “female fragility” and transform the world bycreating a community where women\, trans\, and gender non-conforming folks can buildthe skills and the strength to lead and change the world. With thousands of participants both through community workshops and corporate “Diversity\,Equity\, and Inclusion” training across the United States and around the world\, Frailty Myths hastaught a new generation self-reliance skills\, including woodworking\, climbing\, and sailing. FrailtyMyths has created a transformative new community that restores and rejuvenates\, all whileguiding toward the mission of changing the world.Central to this mission is creating a space where we prioritize the healing of women\, trans\, andgender non-conforming folks\, that are also people of color\, queer\, and economicallymarginalized\, from the trauma of the ever-present misogyny that exists in our society. At Frailty Myths\, we know that having a space to be curious and try new things is fundamentalto our growth and\, more importantly\, to our healing. \n\n\n\nPress Contacts:Erinn Carter | erinncarter@frailtymyths.orgGeorgia Faye Hirsty | georgiafaye@frailtymyths.org

SUMMARY:Translations of Zaynab: Negotiating Space\, Memory & Justice with Dr. Noor Zaidi - The Second Annual Imam Hussein (AS) Lecture on Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation: HQ 136 \n\n\n\nHow do we understand the role of a historical figure whose name has echoed in communities across space and time? Based on archival research and fieldwork in Syria\, Pakistan\, and Iraq\, this talk explores the way the memory of Zaynab bint Ali is drawn upon and reconstructed in different sociopolitical contexts\, as a means of negotiating and claiming space in nationalist narratives\, and complicating notions of gender\, sect\, and citizenship. \n\n\n\nWe are honored to welcome Dr. Noor Zaidi as the 2023 Imam Hussein (AS) Lecturer on Social Justice at Yale. \n\n\n\nThe Annual Imam Imam Hussein Lecture on Social Justice began in 2022. Inspired by the life\, theology and spirituality of Imam Hussein\, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad\, this annual lecture features leading thinkers\, scholars\, activists and cultural producers from the Shia Muslim tradition as they explore the broad themes of social\, economic\, and political justice. Imam Hussein (upon whom be peace) is\, in his life and sacrifice\, the embodiment of the Divine and Prophetic call to establish justice\, mercy\, and compassion in the world. His example and the example of his family continues inspire people of conscience to struggle against systems of oppression and exploitation\, in order to establish the truly beloved community. \n\n\n\nThe lecture is presented by the Muslim Leadership Lab at Dwight Hall in partnership with the Shia Racial Justice Coalition and the Muslim Life Program at the Yale Chaplain’s Office.

SUMMARY:"It's Our Time: Every Generation is Called to Build a Movement" with Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Dwight Hall Jane and William E. Curran ’49 Distinguished Mentor Program presents: \n\n\n\nRev. Dr. William J. Barber II\, social justice activist\, pastor\, and professor of the practice at Yale\, delivers a moral call to action at Yale College.  \n\n\n\nAs this year’s Curran Distinguished Mentor\, Rev. Barber will speak to Yale College students about the transformative power of collective action and movement building and the positive impact of an intergenerational approach to the fight for justice.  \n\n\n\nRev. Barber is the Founding Director of the new Center for Public Theology & Public Policy at Yale Divinity School\, President of Repairers of the Breach\, and Co-Chair of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. \n\n\n\nJoin this public address hosted by Dwight Hall at Yale on Tuesday\, April 4th\, at 6 PM EDT. The topic of his address is “It’s Our Time: Every Generation Is Called To Build A Movement.” \n\n\n\nOver the past few decades\, our nation has experienced the rollback of the human rights and civil rights won by social justice movements throughout our history. The stagnation of wages\, rapid climate change\, the erasure of voting rights protections\, and the lack of an affordable healthcare system amid a global pandemic are only a few of the issues challenging our communities. Building a diverse social justice movement rooted in a moral framework is critical to transforming our communities and the country. In a world that feels increasingly isolated\, a moral fusion movement calls us to come together across differences\, race\, culture\, religion\, sexuality\, gender-identify\, age\, and more\, to organize and mobilize around a moral policy agenda that prioritizes love\, truth\, and justice.  \n\n\n\nApril 4th\, a solemn day\, also marks the 55th anniversary of the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\, who\, at the time of his untimely death\, was organizing with the National Welfare Rights Organization\, worker’s rights movement\, women’s rights movement\, religious leaders\, and people of all races to launch the Poor People’s Campaign to fight poverty in the U.S. and ensure basic economic and human rights. More than 50 years later\, the fight continues.  \n\n\n\nThis event coincides with the launch of the Center for Public Theology & Public Policy at the Yale Divinity School. The Center’s mission is to prepare a new generation of moral leaders to be active participants in creating a just society using the academic\, practical\, and research tools of past and present social justice movements. Learn more at theologyandpolicy.yale.edu. \n\n\n\nA limited amount of in-person seating is available for this event in the Dwight Hall Chapel. Students may register using Yale Connect.  Reception to follow in the Dwight Hall Common Room immediately following the event\, including halal options for iftar. \n\n\n\n\nA waiting list will be maintained for this event. \n\n\n\nAll are welcome to register for the Zoom broadcast of the event.\n\n\n\n\nInterested students may also register for a Pauli Murray College Tea with Reverend Barber on April 6th. For more news about this and other Launch Week events\, please visit this site. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nVisitors must comply with the Yale COVID 19 visitor policy. \n\n\n\nAbout Bishop William J. SUMMARY:Advocating for Refugees in our Community: Civic Allyship Workshop featuring IRIS
DESCRIPTION:Dwight Hall Civic Allyship workshop featuring IRIS: Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services. This workshop will feature an overview of IRIS’s programs and discuss the experience of refugee families resettling in the United States. Attendees will also hear about upcoming advocacy opportunities including a virtual border crossing. \n\n\n\nThis hybrid event is open to the public. Visitors to campus must comply with Yale COVID-19 Visitor Policy as described at: https://covid19.yale.edu/visitors-policy. The zoom event is part of the Journeys Toward Justice series\, a multi-college collaboration spotlighting changemakers across the country who are driving justice and equity forward. Please register here to attend virtually. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout IRIS: \n\n\n\nRefugee families who arrive from overseas come to the U.S. with virtually no material possessions. They have lost homes\, friends\, family\, country\, culture\, and jobs. Most do not speak any English. They have no income\, and many are victims of trauma\, with physical or mental health needs. As great as their initial needs are\, their potential to enrich our community is even greater. \n\n\n\nAsylum seekers\, asylees\, and other immigrant families who seek assistance stabilizing their family situation often have many of the same needs as refugees coming from overseas. However\, since they are already in the U.S.\, it is often the case that they have some limited resources or extended support network that can be built upon with the help of IRIS. \n\n\n\nIRIS provides targeted wrap-around services for all clients\, using a strength-based assessment model\, that offers long-term support for successful integration. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Debra Riding brings over 3 decades of experience in New Haven’s public\, charter\, and independent schools to her role as Director of Education at IRIS.  As an educator\, she prioritizes cross-cultural understanding\, experiential learning\, student empowerment\, and social justice.  Debra has degrees from Yale and Quinnipiac. \n\n\n\n Born in Kabul\, Afghanistan\, and resettled in New Haven in 2016\, Hossna Samadi has passionately devoted the past five years to advocating for and serving refugees and immigrants in New Haven in many different capacities. Having experienced the challenges of being a refugee firsthand\, she is passionate about supporting\, assisting and amplifying their voices\, particularly Afghan women. In her volunteer work with Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services (IRIS)\, she serves as a member of the Cultural Companion Ally Team and as an Ambassador\, speaking to a wide range of audiences. Samadi is the co-founder of the Collective for Refugee and Immigrant Women’s Wellbeing\, whose grant-sponsored pilot project partners with Yale University’s Program on Recovery and Health in the Community. She is a Program Associate at Sanctuary Kitchen by CitySeed. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout the Dwight Hall Civic Allyship Initiative: \n\n\n\nDwight Hall’s Civic Allyship Initiative is elevating the existing work of community organizers in New Haven and beyond. The program confronts complex social challenges\, convening criminal justice advocates\, grassroots activists\, currently and formerly incarcerated people\, students\, and professors in equitable relationships through workshops\, trainings\, and research. Together\, these allies are utilizing new grassroots organizing strategies\, developing opportunities for underrepresented populations in civic leadership\, and laying the groundwork for substantive policy reforms.
