SUMMARY:Mandi Schwartz Marrow Donor Registration Drive at Yale
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of the impact her courageous battle with cancer has had on efforts to save lives through marrow donor registration drives\, the Yale athletic department is once again holding a drive in memory of women’s ice hockey player Mandi Schwartz ’10 (Wilcox\, Sask.) (1988-2011). This is Yale’s 17th annual drive\, matching Mandi’s uniform number (17). \n\n\n\nThe Mandi Schwartz Marrow Donor Registration Drive at Yale\, which is part of the nationwide NMDP Get in the GameSM campaign\, offers multiple ways for people to register for the chance to become a life-saving marrow donor. Donors who could help save lives are located through testing that consists of simple cheek swabs. \n\n\n\n\nJoin in person at Beinecke Plaza on Tuesday\, Apr. 15\, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The drive is open to anyone aged 18-40.\n\nThere will also be a site at Steep Café in Kline Tower from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.\n\n\n\n\n\nAt any time\, anyone who cannot attend the drive in person at Yale can go on-line to  my.nmdp.org/YaleSaves or text YaleSaves to 61474 to start the process of joining the NMDP RegistrySM.\n\n\n\n\nYale’s drives are part of the NMDP Get in the GameSM program\, which started at Villanova in 1992 under the guidance of head football coach Andy Talley. The program involves college athletic teams organizing drives on their campuses. Talley has since partnered with NMDPSM\, formerly known as the National Marrow Donor Program and Be The Match\, to take his efforts to the national level. Larry Ciotti\, a long-time assistant football coach at Yale\, is a friend of Talley’s and brought the idea to Yale in 2008-09. \n\n\n\nThe NMDP Get in the GameSM program\, including more than 250 partnered schools\, has added more than 200\,000 people to the NMDP RegistrySM. Those efforts have resulted in more than 1\,300 life-saving transplants.  \n\n\n\nThe Yale athletic department has held drives each of the past 16 springs – ever since Mandi was first diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in December of 2008. Yale’s record-setting drives have added nearly 10\,000 potential donors to the NMDP RegistrySM\, and at least 102 life-saving donor matches for patients in need have been located through the Bulldogs’ efforts.  \n\n\n\nYale’s drives were led by the football team and women’s ice hockey team each of the first two years. In 2011\, the field hockey team began assisting. In 2018 the men’s soccer team joined these efforts. In 2022 the Yale volleyball team joined\, and in 2023 the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams joined. This year the gymnastics team and the men’s ice hockey team have joined. \n\n\n\nMembers of these teams help spread the word about the need for donors to their classmates\, friends and relatives. They also volunteer to help on Drive Day. \n\n\n\nMandi’s story has been one of the catalysts behind the success of the Yale drives. In her battle with cancer\, she required a blood stem cell transplant to give her a new immune system. With no genetically matching adult donor available\, in September 2010 she had a transplant using two anonymously donated units of umbilical cord blood. A biopsy in December 2010 indicated that she had relapsed\, and she passed away at home in Saskatchewan on Apr. 3\, 2011. \n\n\n\nMandi’s plight shed further light on the needs of cancer patients everywhere\, and the value of marrow donation. Every year\, thousands of people of all ages are diagnosed with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases. Many of them will pass away unless they get a marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant from a matching donor. Seventy percent of these patients do not have a fully matched donor in their family and depend on the NMDP RegistrySM to find a genetic match to save their life. \n\n\n\nTo join the NMDP RegistrySM\, an individual must: \n\n\n\n\nBe between the ages of 18 and 40\n\n\n\nMeet certain health guidelines \n\n\n\nBe willing to donate to any patient in need\n\n\n\n\nThe donor test consists of simple cheek swabs and will only take approximately 15 minutes. \n\n\n\nThose who registered at previous drives are already in the NMDP RegistrySM\, so there is no need for them to register again.Yale is seeking to add as many NEW potential donors as possible. \n\n\n\nThose interested in helping with the Mandi Schwartz Marrow Donor Registration Drive at Yale can contact Larry Ciotti with the Yale football team at larry.ciotti@yale.edu. \n\n\n\n\nMore information on the Mandi Schwartz Marrow Donor Registration Drive at Yale

SUMMARY:Pilgrimage\, Protest\, and the Preservation of Memory: The Case of the 1977 Safar Uprising in Iraq
DESCRIPTION:Location: WLH 309\, 100 Wall St\, New Haven\, CT \n\n\n\nIn 1977\, an attempt to ban the Arbaeen pilgrimage in Iraq transformed a religious procession into a mass anti-government movement. The crackdown that followed—marked by armed confrontation\, arrests\, executions\, and suppression—highlights a critical question: will gatherings for Imam Hussein always be understood\, by political authorities\, as carrying latent political potential? If so\, what are the enduring implications for the Shia community? The talk will also reflect on the scholarly duty to preserve histories of oppression and its connection to the mission of Imam Hussain. \n\n\n\nMarsin Alshamary\, Assistant Professor of Political Science\, Boston College: Prof. Alshamary is a scholar of Middle Eastern politics\, with a primary focus on religious institutions\, civil society\, and protest movements. She is currently working on a book manuscript titled: “A Century of the Iraqi Hawza: How Clerics Shaped Protests and Politics in Modern Day Iraq”\, which explores the historical and contemporary interactions between the Shi’a religious establishment and protest movements. Her work is driven by a commitment to understanding the Middle East’s complexities and contributing to informed discussions in both academic and public spheres. \n\n\n\n———————————————- \n\n\n\nThe Annual Imam Hussein Lecture on Social Justice\, established in 2022\, features leading thinkers\, scholars\, activists\, and cultural producers who draw on the Shia Muslim tradition to explore themes of social\, economic\, and political justice. Inspired by the life and sacrifice of Imam Hussein (upon whom be peace)—the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad and a timeless embodiment of justice\, mercy\, and compassion—this lecture calls us to reflect on the ongoing struggle against systems of oppression and exploitation in pursuit of a truly beloved community. \n\n\n\nPresented by the Muslim Leadership Lab at Dwight Hall\, in partnership with the Shia Racial Justice Coalition and the Muslim Life Program at the Yale Chaplain’s Office.

SUMMARY:From Summer Fellows to Social Leaders: YANA-Dwight Hall Fellowship to Strengthen the Nonprofit Sector
DESCRIPTION:Location: Dwight Hall at Yale (67 High St\, New Haven\, CT) and via Zoom \n\n\n\nRegister here! \n\n\n\nSchedule for event: \n\n\n\n5:00-5:30 – Networking and Light Refreshments \n\n\n\n5:30-6:30 – Panel Discussion and Q&A \n\n\n\nIf you’re joining us on Zoom we will start at 5:30. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a special evening celebrating 8 years of the YANA–Dwight Hall Summer Fellowship. To date\, Yale alumni have helped fund 32 Fellows\, providing transformative opportunities for students to tackle pressing social challenges in public health\, education\, and social justice. Yet\, the need continues to grow—many students who qualify for the Fellowship still lack the resources to participate. \n\n\n\nAs nonprofits face increasing scrutiny and resource constraints\, this conversation will highlight the importance of strengthening leadership pipelines and equipping emerging changemakers with the tools to sustain and grow their impact. Hear directly from former Fellows about how the program shaped their career paths and allowed them to tackle critical issues in their fields. We’ll also feature an alumni Fellowship sponsor on why they continue to invest in this impactful program. \n\n\n\nOur distinguished speakers include Jonathan Fanton PhD ‘78\, former President of the MacArthur Foundation\, Asia Brown MAR MPH’19\, Wellspring Consulting\, and YANA Dwight Hall Summer 2024 fellow Hameeda Uloomi ‘25. The discussion will be moderated by Rob Leighton SOM ‘89 and YANA Board Member emeritus. Their insights\, alongside stories from past Fellows\, will provide a powerful discussion on the Fellowship’s role in shaping the nonprofit sector’s future. \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this inspiring event\, as we highlight the value of your support and drive the final push toward our campaign goal!

SUMMARY:Volunteer with Sunrise Cafe!
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \n\n\n\nStart your morning off on a great note! Join Dwight Hall Tuesday mornings to volunteer at Sunrise Cafe. Volunteers will meet in front of Dwight Hall at 6:00am\, walk together to Sunrise Cafe\, and will return to campus by 9:00am. \n\n\n\nVolunteers are strongly encouraged to wear N95 masks during service. \n\n\n\nSunrise Cafe has been serving breakfast without charge to New Haven’s homeless and hungry since 2015. Each weekday morning\, the Cafe welcomes guests to the undercroft of St. Paul and St. James\, near Wooster Square and three blocks south of the New Haven Green with white tablecloths\, flowers and a rotating menu of fresh\, warm\, nutritious home-cooked food. Your generosity opens our doors. \n\n\n\nCheerful volunteers take each order individually\, deliver the breakfast to our guest and help our paid chef in the kitchen. Thelma Ragsdale\, Operations Manager\, and our volunteers ensure every guest is warmly welcomed. \n\n\n\nSunrise Cafe is uniquely welcoming and secure\, based on trust and mutual respect\, and the rapport built between the volunteer servers and our guests. With a warm welcome and just two rules – no drugs on the premises and no arguments – Sunrise has become a community center for the homeless\, a place to come every weekday morning and gather with friends. \n\n\n\nHungry friends come for the home-cooked\, nourishing breakfast and stay for simple medical services offered by the Cornell Scott Health Center and access to support from social services to find housing. \n\n\n\nSunrise provides a unique opportunity to bridge New Haven’s inequalities that separate us from one another. Volunteers come once and become regulars. Guests and volunteers become friends and greet one another on the street.
