SUMMARY:Centering Community Engagement in Health Care Careers

How can medical professionals improve global health outcomes and reduce health disparities by empowering marginalized communities? Join a panel of health care leaders as they share how thoughtful community involvement changes lives. Attendees will also learn about pathways to community-engaged health care careers.  \n\n\n\nLunch will be provided! \n\n\n\nMeet the panelists: \n\n\n\nAniyizhai Annamalai M.B.B.S.\, M.D.  \n\n\n\nDr. Annamalai is the medical director of the Yale Adult Refugee Clinic that partners with the local refugee resettlement agency to provide health care for all newly arrived refugees in New Haven\, Connecticut. She is also the medical director of the Wellness Center\, a primary care clinic that provides medical care for people with serious mental illness. \n\n\n\nHer academic interest is in integrating physical and mental health care for vulnerable populations\, including refugees and those with serious mental illness. She has been providing direct clinical services for these populations for the last 15 years as both an internist and psychiatrist. \n\n\n\nShe has received several awards recognizing her service to these populations. As an educator\, she has edited ‘Refugee Health Care’\, and authored ‘Medical Management of Psychotropic Side Effects’. Both are clinical reference books for clinicians and students. She is a member of the Association of Medicine and Psychiatry and a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Society of Refugee Health Care Providers. \n\n\n\nIn her role as a physician for these vulnerable populations\, she interfaces with community organizations like IRIS\, the local refugee resettlement agency\, and social service agencies for mentally ill people. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMadeline Kerner ’07  \n\n\n\nMadeline is leading work to support parents raising young children with ADHD as Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Luminary Impact Fund. \n\n\n\nMadeline last served as CEO & Co-Founder of Matriculate\, a national college access organization\, supporting high-achieving\, low-income juniors and seniors navigate the college process and attend colleges where they will thrive. During this time\, Matriculate supported more than 15\,000 students nationally. In 2021\, results of a randomized control trial show that the Matriculate model was highly effective\, with Matriculate students 25% more likely than a control group to attend the top 80 colleges and universities and to persist at statistically significant higher rates. \n\n\n\nPrior to Matriculate\, Madeline served as Director of Strategic Initiatives for America Achieves\, a national education nonprofit\, and Director of Operations at Amplify\, an education technology business. Previously\, Madeline worked as National Director of Outreach and Development and Founding Chicago Executive Director for Peer Health Exchange (PHE)\, a health education organization that gives teens the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy decisions by training college students to teach a comprehensive health curriculum in public schools. Madeline graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in History. \n\n\n\nMadeline serves on the Board of Dwight Hall at Yale and Matriculate and resides in Brooklyn with her family. \n\n\n\nDarius Mostaghimi ’25 M.D. \n\n\n\nDarius is a fourth-year Yale School of Medicine student from Madison\, Connecticut. He is a Clinical Advisor at HAVEN Free Clinic\, where he manages primary care teams for low-income individuals without insurance. He is planning to practice in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.

Volunteers will meet in front of Dwight Hall at 6:00am\, walk together to Sunrise Cafe\, and will return to campus by 9:00am. \n\n\n\nVolunteers are strongly encouraged to wear N95 masks during service. \n\n\n\nSunrise Cafe has been serving breakfast without charge to New Haven’s homeless and hungry since 2015. Each weekday morning\, the Cafe welcomes guests to the undercroft of St. Paul and St. James\, near Wooster Square and three blocks south of the New Haven Green with white tablecloths\, flowers and a rotating menu of fresh\, warm\, nutritious home-cooked food. Your generosity opens our doors. \n\n\n\nCheerful volunteers take each order individually\, deliver the breakfast to our guest and help our paid chef in the kitchen. Thelma Ragsdale\, Operations Manager\, and our volunteers ensure every guest is warmly welcomed. \n\n\n\nSunrise Cafe is uniquely welcoming and secure\, based on trust and mutual respect\, and the rapport built between the volunteer servers and our guests. With a warm welcome and just two rules – no drugs on the premises and no arguments – Sunrise has become a community center for the homeless\, a place to come every weekday morning and gather with friends. \n\n\n\nHungry friends come for the home-cooked\, nourishing breakfast and stay for simple medical services offered by the Cornell Scott Health Center and access to support from social services to find housing. \n\n\n\nSunrise provides a unique opportunity to bridge New Haven’s inequalities that separate us from one another. Volunteers come once and become regulars. Guests and volunteers become friends and greet one another on the street.

We will have some brief guided conversation around the transformative potential of civic allyship and how students can develop skills for deep partnership with community leaders. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Dwight Hall Civic Allyship:Dwight Hall’s Civic Allyship Initiative is elevating the existing work of community organizers in New Haven and beyond. The program confronts complex social challenges\, convening criminal justice advocates\, grassroots activists\, currently and formerly incarcerated people\, students\, and professors in equitable relationships through workshops\, trainings\, and research. Together\, these allies are utilizing new grassroots organizing strategies\, developing opportunities for underrepresented populations in civic leadership\, and laying the groundwork for substantive policy reforms.

Following the screening\, we will be joined by Lacy for a conversation on the film\, the ongoing mass incarceration of Native Hawaiians\, and paths toward decolonial and abolitionist futures. \n\n\n\nThe screening will take place in Silliflicks\, the movie theater in Silliman College. DESCRIPTION:Register here! \n\n\n\nStart your morning off on a great note! Join Dwight Hall Tuesday mornings to volunteer at Sunrise Cafe. Volunteers will meet in front of Dwight Hall at 6:00am\, walk together to Sunrise Cafe\, and will return to campus by 9:00am. \n\n\n\nVolunteers are strongly encouraged to wear N95 masks during service. \n\n\n\nSunrise Cafe has been serving breakfast without charge to New Haven’s homeless and hungry since 2015. Each weekday morning\, the Cafe welcomes guests to the undercroft of St. Paul and St. James\, near Wooster Square and three blocks south of the New Haven Green with white tablecloths\, flowers and a rotating menu of fresh\, warm\, nutritious home-cooked food. Your generosity opens our doors. \n\n\n\nCheerful volunteers take each order individually\, deliver the breakfast to our guest and help our paid chef in the kitchen. Thelma Ragsdale\, Operations Manager\, and our volunteers ensure every guest is warmly welcomed. \n\n\n\nSunrise Cafe is uniquely welcoming and secure\, based on trust and mutual respect\, and the rapport built between the volunteer servers and our guests. With a warm welcome and just two rules – no drugs on the premises and no arguments – Sunrise has become a community center for the homeless\, a place to come every weekday morning and gather with friends. \n\n\n\nHungry friends come for the home-cooked\, nourishing breakfast and stay for simple medical services offered by the Cornell Scott Health Center and access to support from social services to find housing. \n\n\n\nSunrise provides a unique opportunity to bridge New Haven’s inequalities that separate us from one another. Volunteers come once and become regulars. Guests and volunteers become friends and greet one another on the street.
