Dr. Qaderi is currently at Yale as a visiting scholar with the MacMillan Center\, and we are thrilled to host her for a talk and discussion about her award-winning book\, “Dancing in the Mosque; An Afghan Mother’s Letter to Her Son”. DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in learning more about health equity in medicine\, particularly about how we can build a new future that is anti-racist and justice-centered in the medical field? Please join Dr. Carmen Black\, Dr. Amanda Calhoun\, and Dr. Marco Ramos in a moderated panel by Lisbette Acosta to discuss what a healing medical profession looks like\, particularly healing individuals and groups systematically affected by structural racism and discrimination in psychiatry\, medical education\, and related fields. A catered dinner will be provided. \n\n\n\nWhen: February 27th\, 2024 from 5-7 PM (Panel begins at 5:30 PM; participants are welcome to come at 5 PM to mingle and get food)Where: Linsly-Chittenden Hall (LC) 102\, 63 High Street OR Zoom.Registration is required for both in-person and virtual components. In-person attendance is fulfilled on a first-come\, first-serve basis. Register to attend here! \n\n\n\nAmanda Joy Calhoun\, MD\, MPH\, is the Chief Resident of the Yale Albert J. Solnit Integrated Adult/Child Psychiatry program\, renowned for her dedication to social justice and health equity. With degrees from Yale University and Saint Louis University\, she is a distinguished fellow in various leadership programs. Dr. Calhoun’s research\, focusing on the mental health effects of anti-Black racism in children\, has received significant funding and resulted in numerous publications and presentations. Additionally\, she is a prolific writer and media commentator\, addressing the impact of medical racism on Black Americans in outlets such as the Boston Globe and TIME magazine\, and has appeared on major TV platforms including CBS News and MSNBC. \n\n\n\nCarmen Black\, MD hails from Augusta\, Georgia\, and boasts a distinguished background as a second-generation graduate of the Medical College of Georgia (MCG). She is a seasoned psychiatrist\, having received training from the University of Pennsylvania and MCG. Currently serving as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine since 2019\, she also holds a primary clinical appointment at the Connecticut Mental Health Center. Dr. Black’s professional ethos is deeply anchored in advocating for historically marginalized communities\, particularly as a proud Black American physician with roots tracing back to enslaved ancestors. She is a vocal proponent for socio-historical racial representation in medicine and is actively engaged in research aimed at promoting racial justice within academic medicine and addressing the detrimental impacts of racism and mental health discrimination in clinical settings. \n\n\n\nMarco Ramos\, MD PhD\, is an Assistant Professor in the History of Medicine and Psychiatry at Yale University\, distinguished for his pioneering work in mental health history. His research delves into health activism and the history of drugs in Latin America\, including a forthcoming book on Cold War violence and health justice in Argentina. He also explores the history of psychedelics\, particularly ayahuasca\, in the Amazon. Dr. Ramos’s writings have been featured in esteemed journals such as The American Historical Review\, and he brings a critical historical perspective to anti-racism interventions in science\, medicine\, and public health through his teaching.

SUMMARY:Ambition to Action: Embedding Social Impact in Startup DNA
DESCRIPTION:Companies wishing to both have a positive impact on the communities in which they operate and to mitigate any negative impact their companies might have on the communities they touch throughout their value chains should think seriously about how to incorporate social impact into company operations from day one. Social impact can come in many forms depending on the type of company and its core services and products. This is why it is critical to assess where your company has a footprint from the outset. This dynamic workshop will allow attendees to explore how various stakeholders within a company can both champion social impact internally and measure their social impact footprint as a business. \n\n\n\n​We will start the discussion with a short fireside chat between the workshop curator and a leader from the private sector social impact space to hear from experts on how social impact strategy is implemented and measured. We will then break the attendees down into different groupings so that they can work through different scenario prompts related to how various actors within a company can apply their functions to achieve social impact. \n\n\n\n​ \n\n\n\n​About the Speaker: \n\n\n\n​Annabel Lee McShane Bickford has over a decade of experience working at the intersection of business and human rights\, ESG policy\, sustainability strategy and international policy advocacy. She has expertise in policy analysis and strategy development at both the international and national level and has led policy engagement with numerous Fortune 500 companies\, from the C-Suite to the working team level. She is currently the Senior Director of Private Sector Policy at Global Citizen\, one of the world’s leading international advocacy organizations.

DESCRIPTION:Register here! \n\n\n\nStart your morning off on a great note! Join Dwight Hall Tuesday mornings to volunteer at Sunrise Cafe. Volunteers will meet in front of Dwight Hall at 6:00am\, walk together to Sunrise Cafe\, and will return to campus by 9:00am. \n\n\n\nVolunteers are strongly encouraged to wear N95 masks during service. \n\n\n\nSunrise Cafe has been serving breakfast without charge to New Haven’s homeless and hungry since 2015. Each weekday morning\, the Cafe welcomes guests to the undercroft of St. Paul and St. James\, near Wooster Square and three blocks south of the New Haven Green with white tablecloths\, flowers and a rotating menu of fresh\, warm\, nutritious home-cooked food. Your generosity opens our doors. \n\n\n\nCheerful volunteers take each order individually\, deliver the breakfast to our guest and help our paid chef in the kitchen. Thelma Ragsdale\, Operations Manager\, and our volunteers ensure every guest is warmly welcomed. \n\n\n\nSunrise Cafe is uniquely welcoming and secure\, based on trust and mutual respect\, and the rapport built between the volunteer servers and our guests. With a warm welcome and just two rules – no drugs on the premises and no arguments – Sunrise has become a community center for the homeless\, a place to come every weekday morning and gather with friends. \n\n\n\nHungry friends come for the home-cooked\, nourishing breakfast and stay for simple medical services offered by the Cornell Scott Health Center and access to support from social services to find housing. \n\n\n\nSunrise provides a unique opportunity to bridge New Haven’s inequalities that separate us from one another. Volunteers come once and become regulars. Guests and volunteers become friends and greet one another on the street.

SUMMARY:Volunteering 101: Fundamentals
DESCRIPTION:Dwight Hall is launching a Volunteering 101 series to provide greater support for student exploration of volunteer opportunities and to equip students with tools for the effective practice of service.  \n\n\n\nOur first workshop – Fundamentals of Volunteering – will take place on Friday\, 1/26 at 3pm. The first 45 minutes will feature an overview of Dwight Hall\, discuss ways to find opportunities\, tailor interests\, plan for realistic commitments\, and develop habits of reflective practice.  \n\n\n\nThe second part of the workshop will entail a group service project assembling personal care kits for those experiencing homelessness and taking inventory of supplies for future kits.
