Hello dearest friends and supporters of the New Haven PAWS Project,
It is with heavy hearts that we report that, due to the unimaginable torrential flooding and rainstorms sweeping the Northeastern United States, a significant portion of the New Haven PAWS Project’s inventory in our garage has been irreparably damaged. We are simply crushed to report that our garage was not as waterproof as we originally thought, and this has led us to discard several hundred pairs of shoes, towels, socks, and hygiene products. But not all is lost: many other items in the garage were spared and are being reviewed to see if we are able to use them this Fall (and likely we will!).
Despite this major setback, we are determined to press on. As a small organization dedicated to addressing homelessness in New Haven one pair of shoes and socks at a time, we have always had the motto: “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade!” We have decided to turn this misfortune into an opportunity.
If you are able, please consider contributing to our GoFundMe campaign. Any amount, no matter how small, will help us recover some of the immense losses we suffered this summer. Thank you in advance for your generosity. We have, for the last six years since we were founded, relied significantly on community volunteers and donations, and would not be the organization we are today without your unyielding encouragement and support.
As an added incentive, our Co-Executive Director, Ryan Sutherland (YSM ’26), has agreed to shave his head if we reach $600 by the end of the week. Help us purchase new shoes, socks, and hygiene products for our neighbors experiencing homelessness, poverty, or who are, undocumented (and make Ryan bald!).
The New Haven PAWS Project (Poverty Alleviation through Washing Soles) seeks to provide footwear and podiatric care to those experiencing homelessness and extreme poverty in New Haven. The PAWS Project engages the greater Yale community in events centered around foot health, including foot washing services and shoe, sock, and hygiene kit giveaways. We are always open to new volunteers!
