Honoring Dr. Betty Shabazz and Malcolm X El Hajj Malik El Shabazz: A Gravesite Gathering of Prayer and Reflection

As part of the MX100: Why Malcolm? Why Today? series of programs and in conjunction with the Muslim Life Program at the Yale Chaplain’s Office, the Muslim Leadership Lab (MLL) is organizing a special visit to honor El Hajj Malik El Shabazz and Dr. Betty Shabazz on the 60th anniversary of Brother Malcolm’s martyrdom.

TWO Buses will leave at 8:15 am from Phelps Gate to travel to Ferncliff Cemetery.

BUS #1 will return to Yale Campus for approximately 1:00 pm.

BUS #2 will head to NYC for a special tour of Malcolm X archive at the Schomburg Center (515 Malcolm X Boulevard, Harlem, NY) led by scholar and Yale PhD candidate Iman AbdoulKarim. Registration is limited to 25 people. Special arrangements will be made for Friday prayer services at the Mosque of the Islamic Brotherhood (at the site of Brother Malcolm’s Muslim Mosque Inc. at 1:00 pm; 130 W 113th St, New York, NY)

PLEASE NOTE: Participants going to NYC will be responsible for their own travel back to New Haven

Please register by February 16, 2025. If you are signing up for the Schomburg Center visit, we will confirm your participation via email as numbers are limited.

At the maqam (gravesite), there will be communal recitation of Qur’an, spiritual reminders, remembrances, and communal prayer. There will be time for personal reflection and prayer. People of all faiths – and none – are welcome. We will also visit the gravesites of James Baldwin and Paul Robeson.

The visit will be facilitated by MLL convener Abdul-Rehman Malik (abdul-rehman.malik@yale.edu) and Iman AbdoulKarim (iman.abdoulkarim@yale.edu).
