Sunrise Cafe is a local organization that provides free breakfast to community members in need. You can learn more here: https://sunrisecafenewhaven.org/ Dwight Hall partners with Sunrise Cafe to provide Yale-affiliated volunteers for the breakfast service every Wednesday morning during the academic year. This is a unique and popular way to support the New Haven community, especially for volunteers who want to get involved but can’t take on a long-term commitment. Students, staff, spouses, and all members of the Yale community are welcome.
The Volunteer Coordinator (VC-SC) is responsible for recruiting volunteers for this weekly service opportunity and leading the team of 5-10 volunteers each Wednesday from 6:30 am to 9:00am. This year, there may also be a second day each week that the Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for managing.
Responsibilities include:
– Recruiting volunteers by reaching out to a maximum of students (via residential colleges, student organizations, academic departments, professors, friends, classmates, etc.) and using a variety of methods (emails, flyers, posters, social media, canvasing, etc.) to identify energized and motivated volunteers for Sunrise Cafe
– Answer questions and concerns of potential volunteers, screen candidates for availability, interest, and ability to volunteer
– Support identified individuals through Dwight Hall’s volunteer onboarding process including completion of all required trainings
– Attend each Wednesday breakfast service and lead the group of volunteers on the walk from Old Campus to Sunrise Cafe
– Submit weekly reflections and keep Dwight Hall staff informed about program activities and progress
– Troubleshoot any problems that may arise
Job Requirements
– Availability and willingness to commit to early morning shift each Wednesday during the academic year (6:30am to 9:30am)
– Good organizational and communication skills
– High energy, outgoing personality, ability to connect with and motivate other students
– Ability to problem solve
Our ideal candidate will have:
– Federal Work Study eligibility
– Previous volunteer experience
– Previous experience in food service
Hours: 0-6/week
Hourly Rate: $17.00/hr
