Bridges ESL (English as a Second Language) is a non-profit…

Our Mission:
At Bridges ESL, our mission is to provide free English language lessons to individuals in the Yale and New Haven community who aspire to enhance their communication skills and bridge language gaps. We are committed to empowering these individuals with the English proficiency necessary for effectiveness in family, workplace, and community settings, ultimately building bridges for their future.
Millions of immigrants arrive in the United States facing the challenge of limited English language skills. Proficiency in English is crucial for pursuing employment, obtaining higher education, acquiring citizenship, and engaging in daily interactions. Bridges ESL aims to support our students in developing confidence to navigate English interactions, equipping them with the tools needed to actively participate in their new home country.
Our Activities:
Weekly Tutoring Classes (Direct Service):
Bridges ESL conducts free English tutoring classes on a weekly basis for students in the New Haven area and beyond. These classes serve as a cornerstone for language development, fostering an environment where learners can enhance their communication skills.
Tutor/Tutee Bonding Events (Direct Service):
In addition to weekly classes, we organize bonding events to strengthen the connection between tutors and tutees. These events include study sessions and opportunities for students to meet, boosting morale within the club. This initiative addresses low turnout or a need for increased engagement, providing a physical space for those tutoring or being tutored online to connect with others.
Student Leaders:
Meet our dedicated student leaders who drive the mission forward:

Together, we are committed to making a positive impact by breaking language barriers and fostering a supportive community for language learners in the Yale and New Haven area.

Activities
Bridges ESL Classes Direct Service Bridges ESL classes are weekly, small-group tutoring sessions where Yale undergraduate volunteers work in small groups with New Haven residents to support English language development. Bridges Brunch Direct Service Each semester, through the generosity of our sponsors and Yale student tutors, we partner with Yale Hospitality to bring as many of our students as possible to the residential dining halls for brunch. These meals offer a special opportunity for our students to feel welcomed and included in the Yale community. Weekly Saturday classes Direct Service Every Saturday morning, we reserve La Casa and the AACC spaces to host our Bridges ESL classes, which serve community members from the New Haven Greater community. We start our classes with a wide-group meetup over a light breakfast to allow the students to interact with each other before delving into their independent classes. We offer various levels of English instruction, from beginner to advanced classes. Depending on the level of students, classes are structured to meet the goals of our students so that they may be promoted to the next level for continuous terms. We are so proud to see that most of returning students are promoted to the next level after initial participation in our program. Classes last two hours, but it is not seldom that our students stay for longer to continue to engage with our tutors and students. English Language Tutoring Direct Service Bridges ESL provides free small-group English tutoring to immigrants and internationals in the New Haven community. Our mission is to help adult learners acquire the English skills necessary to confidently navigate family, work, and community life in the United States. Bridges ESL Community Brunch Social/Cultural/Team-Building With our growing community, we want to create more opportunities to nourish student-tutor relationships. Bridges is truly a diverse community, and we believe that we can bridge these cultures by sharing a meal in a Yale dining hall after a select lesson this semester. Not only does this provide us the opportunity to get to know our students outside of the classroom but it also integrates our students into the rest of the Yale community. Additionally, our Anthology project compiles student work, including poems, stories, reflections on their time at Bridges, and other creative pieces. These are printed and distributed at our end-of-semester celebration. End of Semester Celebration Social/Cultural/Team-Building Our end-of-semester celebration is a community gathering to honor our students? dedication and progress in learning English throughout the semester.
