Partners In Health Engage

Our Mission:

Partners In Health (PIH) Engage mobilizes students to stand up for the global right to health through advocacy, fundraising, community building, and education. PIH collaborates with national governments to strengthen public health systems and expand access to care.

Our Activities:

Global Health Professor Panel with YSPH
Our global health professor panel will be in partnership with experts at the Yale School of Public Health. We look forward to inviting professors to share their work and opinions on global health efforts at Yale and abroad.

First Informational Meeting
New members will receive an overview of PIH Engage, goals for the semester, our alignment with the overall network, some plans for this year, and leadership roles.

PIH Engage: Global Day of Action
Bending the Arc Screening. Bending the Arc tells the story of Dr. Paul Farmer’s vision to begin a movement that would change global health forever.

Crash Course Party
The PIH Engage Crash Course provides a comprehensive curriculum to students on global health advocacy and action. Topics range from DEI to global citizenship.

Harvard-Yale Event
An event to connect students from our Yale PIH Engage chapter with students from the Harvard chapter. Conversations at this event will focus on strategizing ways to further each chapter’s impact both locally and abroad.

Letter to the Editor Write-In
Advocacy is a significant component of our mission as a chapter. The letter to editor write-in is one of the many advoacy events that will enable students to learn about global health efforts and eduate the Yale and New Haven communities. The write-in will also provide students guidance on how to publish their opinon in a public forum

Advocacy Call-a-thon
Through a call-a-thon, we will actively reach out to Members of Congress Offices, with the intention of scheduling in-person meetings with them. This event is the perfect stepping-stone after our email-writing session which we held in the fall.

Global Health “Speed Dating”
This event falls under our Education & Team Building committee, and we hope to foster a sense of bonding and community within our chapter and the greater Yale community.

Workshop with alumna Anita Wu (‘03, ‘06 JD)
Ms. Wu will coach us on oral advocacy, community-building, fundraising, etc., all areas of expertise. We would love to hold this workshop with other PIH Engage Chapters in the area.

Meeting with Representative DeLauro
We look forward to meeting with Representative DeLauro in the New Haven office to advocate for legislation including the Community Healthcare Workers Act as well as the Paul Farmer Memorial Resolution

Giving Tuesday Fundraising
Giving Tuesday is a national campaign aimed at grassroots fundraising. Chapter members will have the opprotunity to reach out to their local communities and share information about supporting global health.

Global Health & Cookies: Cross Campus Bake Sale
Global Health and Cookies will be a fun event that provides both an opportunity for fundraising and education. We are excited to share the importance of the right to global health with fellow students and community members.

Valentine’s Day Candy Gram Fundraiser
We will fundraise in line with PIHE’s campaign for this year, which is supporting the Maternal Center of Excellence (MCOE) in Sierra Leone. To execute this fundraiser, we will encourage Yale community members to send “candy grams” to their friends and peers, charging them a few dollars for this service. All of the proceeds will go toward the MCOE.

Fun Run for the Maternal Health Center of Excellence
This Fun Run will hopefully receive much enthusiasm, as it will take place in the spring once the weather has improvd! We hope to raise money for the Maternal Center of Excellence. We plan to charge $20 per race participant.

Pieing Fundraiser
A volunteer will agree to be the “target” and Yale community members will have the chance to pay $4 to “pie” the target. All proceeds will go to the Maternal Center of Excellence.

Activities

Splash class (taught by Education committee leads) Advocacy or Activism This event will fulfill our Education committee’s goal of spreading the word about global health and the threat of tuberculosis to the broader New Haven community. In the ‘Global Health 101’ class taught by our Education committee leads, high school students will have the opportunity to learn about global health and its applications. General Meetings Advocacy or Activism We meet as a club all together every two weeks, and on the weeks when we don’t come together, we host separate committee meetings. It’s important that we make the most of our meetings as an entire group. Activities as a club most often include advocacy events, preparing for a fundraiser, discussing a topic in global health, or brainstorming future events. Speaker panel with tuberculosis researchers Advocacy or Activism This year, Partners In Health is fundraising for global tuberculosis treatment. To further educate team members and the surrounding community about efforts to mitigate TB worldwide, we are looking forward to organizing a panel of professors and researchers to share their expertise. Valentine’s Day Themed “Speed-dating” (Community Building & Fundraising activities) Advocacy or Activism For our speed-dating meeting, students will learn from each other about interests in global health, post-graduation plans, and form collaborations for future club projects. Tea and desserts with a global health professional Advocacy or Activism We will invite a professor who either works at Yale or is Partners in Health-adjacent. The professor will speak about his/her work in global health more broadly and will also delve into his/her research on TB, given that TB is our campaign focus for this year. We will need to supply refreshments for this event. World TB Day Advocacy or Activism We will be setting up a table on campus with brochures about Partners in Health, Tuberculosis, and what the Yale community can do to get involved. Bending the Arc Documentary Screening Advocacy or Activism Bending the Arc tells the story of Dr. Paul Farmer’s vision to begin a movement that would change global health forever. We look forward to organizing a screening of this documentary in order to share more about Partners In Health mission to transform the approach to global health delivery. “Letter to the Editor & Lattes”: A letter to the editor writing sesssion Advocacy or Activism During this meeting, we will host a letter-to-the-editor writing session. This will be a great opportunity for all club members to come together to support each other in letter writing. We will be able to brainstorm together and bounce ideas off each other. Since this event will likely take place on a Sunday, it will be nice to offer lattes to our members! Snacks for meeting and student engagement Advocacy or Activism Snacks for weekly meetings. Our club alternates between general weekly meetings and committee meetings. Valentine’s Day Fundraiser Fundraising We are organizing a Valentine’s day candy gram fundraiser (this was a huge success last year!). These materials will allow for a successful fundraising event. The fundraiser (to support Partners in Health’s TB programming) will be advertised to the entire student body and will span four days. Given the outreach aspect, this will also serve as an education opportunity to expand awareness about global health equity and tuberculosis care. Halloween Candy Gram Fundraiser Fundraising We are organizing a halloween candy gram fundraiser. The fundraiser (to support Partners in Health’s TB programming) will be advertised to the entire student body and will span four days. Given the outreach aspect, this will also serve as an education opportunity to expand awareness about global health equity and tuberculosis care. Fundraising committee meetings Fundraising The fundraising committee will be meeting in-person every two weeks (the “off” weeks will be general club meetings). Having a few snacks at the committee meetings will be an added incentive for club members to attend and participate in fundraising-related activities! Whales of Yale partnership fundraising Fundraising PIH is partnering with Whales of Yale to promote global health equity efforts on capmus through making new Whales. This is a creative and fun way to engage Yale?s campus and help support another student-run initiative with their material load. PIH: Cupcakes on Cross Campus Fundraising Cupcakes will be sold on cross campus for raising funds toward ending TB! Along with raising money, we will be advocating and spreading work about TB and the PIH organization. PIH Engage Boo Gram Fundraiser Fundraising This Halloween, send a sweet scare to your friends while supporting a great cause! Our Boo Grams fundraiser delivers candy and notes across campus, spreading festive cheer and raising money for Partners In Health?s fight against tuberculosis. Every Boo Gram purchased helps fund life-saving treatment and prevention programs worldwide. Join us in making Halloween fun, meaningful, and impactful! Holiday Trivia Night for Global Health Fundraising Test your knowledge, show off your competitive spirit, and support a cause that matters! We?re hosting a festive, holiday-themed Trivia Night in collaboration with the Advocacy Network to raise awareness about global health challenges. Teams will compete through rounds of fun and challenging questions, with a raffle and prizes adding extra excitement. Proceeds benefit Partners In Health?s fight against tuberculosis, turning a night of cheer and friendly rivalry into meaningful global impact. Valentines Day Gram Fundraiser Fundraising We sold candy grams to raise money for TB prevention and treatment programming. Cupcakes for a Cause Fundraising We will partner with Claire’s Cornercopia to have a cupcake fundraiser to raise money for TB awareness. Partners in Health Engage Speaker Event Social/Cultural/Team-Building We hope to host a large speaker event later in the semester focused on a specific Public/Global Health topic of our (or our speaker’s) choice. At this event, we hope to provide food for both the speaker(s) and the audience. This will be one of our main events as the Community Building and Education committee of PIH. Cookies for a Cause Social/Cultural/Team-Building We will be baking cookies and selling them in order to fundraise for and spread awareness about the anti-Tuberculosis movement. Careers in Public and Global Health Social/Cultural/Team-Building We had current medical and graduate students from the Yale School of Public Health to speak about their studies and career trajectories.
