MathCOUNTS

Our Mission:

(1) Building a lasting interest in mathematics;

(2) Discovering hidden talent throughout age ranges;

(3) Increasing achievement around math in New Haven;

(4) Serving the New Haven community by improving the general level of mathematics education.

Our Activities:

November School Competition
This is a preliminary competition hosted at Yale in November for New Haven Public Schools to prepare for the MATHCOUNTS Chapter competition in February. Typically, private New Haven schools dominate the Chapter competition every year, so Yale MathCounts Outreach wishes to host a practice (easier) school round earlier in the academic year to help public school students adjust and prepare for competition mathematics. Competition mathematics is typically distinct from math taught in schools, so this provides an opportunity for underprivileged students to have more exposure to the types of problems that will be present in the MATHCOUNTS Chapter round.

Girls’ Math Day
Girls’ Math Day is held annually in the fall to celebrate the accomplishments of women in math, and to encourage our local New Haven female students to continue their studies in mathematics. It is a day of seminars and speakers hosted at Yale for local New Haven schools, and lunch is catered by Yale MathCounts Outreach.

New Haven Chapter Round
Regional middle school math competition for students in the New Haven area to qualify for states.

Yale April Competition
Middle school math competition for students in New Haven public schools.
